FAQs:

What do students learn in class?

Drawing & Painting 6-8 Year Olds
Children will learn how to improve their drawing and painting skills with various exercises and projects each week. They will begin with the importance of using basic shapes to begin a drawing and how to develop their skills of seeing. They will learn to mix acrylic paints and work in pastels. They will explore fun with brush techniques, various approaches to painting, and learn how to achieve 3-dimensions in their work. They will create several finished paintings.

Drawing & Painting 9-11 Year Olds
These artists will paint and draw from life as well as using other reference material. They will continue their studies on simplifying a subject, mixing colors, and creating 3-dimensions with value. These projects continue to improve their drawing, painting, and observation skills.

How long are the sessions?

The sessions are 8 consecutive weeks (unless there is a holiday). Students take a total of 8 classes in a session. Students have the opportunity to do make-up classes within the session for any missed classes.

How many kids are in a class?

Each class has no more than 8 student plus one spot for a make-up.

Do you provide supplies?

We provide most of the supplies. There is a one-time supply fee when students begin classes, and they are expected to bring a roll of paper towels or baby wipes at the start of each session.

What makes these classes different than a park district class?

Mainstreet Art Center is a fine art school. The students are not craft focused. We strive to develop the fine art skills of seeing shapes, and exploring different mediums and art techniques during class. Their are some class projects mixed with students picking their own references to works from.

Is art class a good fit for my student?

If your student is interested in growing their creativity and developing art skills, Mainstreet classes could be a good fit. Students receive direction from the teacher, but are also expected to be able to follow directions and work independently during some parts of the class. We are not a good fit for students who need one-to-one help throughout class. Our teachers are wonderful and creative artists who love working with children and seeing their creativity bloom.

Can adults stay with the student during class?

We ask that you drop your student off to class. We do not allow adults to stay in the classroom with their students.
