Class Descriptions:

Drawing, Oils and Pastels

The Drawing, Oil & Pastel classes are ongoing classes.

Each new student starts with 8 weeks of charcoal drawing.  We want to be sure that everyone has a good understanding of the fundamentals of drawing.  We will teach you how to break down the complexities of a drawing to basic shapes and then to develop it into a more finished detailed piece.  You will learn how to measure proportions and relationships and to develop values.  It is important to feel comfortable with drawing before starting to paint.  You will complete 3 finished charcoal drawings.  Each drawing gets a little more complex as you go.

The next 8 week session includes a color wheel one week.  You will learn why you do it and how it will help you in your painting.  Then you can choose to go into Pastel or Oils.  You will pick your own references and the teacher will help decide which will be the best to start with.  She or he will show you how to start a painting and how to develop it.  Every painting presents new problems or new challenges.  You will continue to learn how to problem solve and how to eventually become more expressive in your work.  It is a life long learning process.  There will be some demonstrations, special class projects on occasion, and working from life is encouraged.

Beginning students work in the same class with more advanced students.  It works well.  Each student is given individual instruction at his or her level of development.  Everyone is supportive and the new students learn a lot by watching what the advanced students are doing and the advanced students understand the fears of the new student, because they all started at the same place.

There are occasions where a few of the charcoal steps are skipped, depending on the level of experience a person has coming into the studio.  A portfolio must be presented showing previous and current work in order to skip some of the procedures.

Watercolor

Watercolor classes are ongoing classes.  The charcoal drawing session must be taken first if you have no drawing experience.  All levels of students, from beginner to more advanced, are taught in the same class.  Individual attention is given to each person at their own level.  Information on materials and a variety of techniques and applications of paint will be continuously explored.  There will be class demonstrations and various group projects as needed and suggested at each session, depending on class need.

Open Studio

Open Studio runs twice a month from September until the end of May (No Open Studio in December).

This is uninstructed studio time, where anyone can come in to paint or draw for $15.00 a night.  A model is provided for your use as well, usually for one long pose.  We prefer to have a 2 month commitment of $60.00.  If a one shot deal is all you can do, then please do it!  Take advantage of this great opportunity to work from a model and improve on all your skills.  Please call a week in advance to reserve your space.  Size limited to 8.

Portrait Steps

Portraiture Basics - Starts Here!!   It starts with drawing. Good demos, lectures and practice will give you a better understanding of how to draw the head then progress into painting.

You will learn to build the structure of the head, block in with masses, mix flesh tones and develop the features in the face. Various exercises and studies will take place.

Figure Drawing

Learning how to see and interpret reality through line drawing helps you develop the ability to think and see like an artist.  Cookie will lead you through a series of exercises designed to train the artist to draw figures with accuracy, simplicity and skill.  This class will strengthen your figure drawing skills for both beginner and experienced artists.  Sessions will begin with short exercises to capture gesture, movement and anatomy.
