Mary Qian

Portrait/Figure Painting Workshop

Friday, Saturday & Sunday,

April 24, 25 & 26, 2015

9:00 – 4:00pm

$400.00

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Mary Qian went to Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. There she earned her BFA in Fine Arts and Illustration in 1998. Originally from Shanghai, China, Mary went through the traditional Chinese educational system focusing on the sciences while studying Chinese painting on her own. Before coming to the U.S., she admired the ancient Chinese painters but found her true voice for painting when she discovered the western artists. It was the realism of Rembrandt, Velazquez, Repin - her particular favorites - that she found to be the artistic style that she had been looking for.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
During this 3-day workshop, students may choose to paint a portrait or a figure from life.
Through demos and individual instruction, the class is organized to enhance each student’s strengths and to help identify and overcome individual weaknesses. The first day will be a demo. We will concentrate on value and edges the second day, color and form the third bringing it all together. Depicting a three-dimensional figure on a two-dimensional painting surface is, by itself, a difficult task.
