WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Water is an intriguing subject because it takes so many forms. Explore waves, reflections, ripples, calm surfaces, waterfalls, glistening surfaces and shallow transparent pools. Through daily demonstrations, discussions, gentle critiques and lots of humor, Susan will guide you as you practice a variety of painting techniques to convey each type of water feature. Expect to take home many small studies. ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Susan holds a BFA in Painting from Carnegie Mellon University. A native of Pennsylvania, she has lived in Lake Zurich, Illinois, for 20 years. After many years of working as an illustrator and graphic designer, she turned to oil painting full time in 2002. Since then, her work has been juried into many respected shows, including the Oil Painters of America National Exhibition, and she has won awards in the OPA Eastern Regional, Salon International, the American Impressionist Society, Plein Air Easton and other exhibits. Susan's work has appeared in articles in Southwest Art, American Art Collector, Fine Art Connoisseur, International Artist and American Artist magazines.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

This class is for painters of all levels, working in oils, pastels or acrylics.  "I want to get all painters in this workshop to work on strengthening their current abilities, by recognizing any bad habits, and seeing a, perhaps, better system for simplifying the whole painting process.  I will demonstrate all my suggestions and shortcuts to this process each day. There will be tons of information given each day and we will stress the importance of making the process enjoyable and fun. Enjoy this 2 day painting experience."

You will study the basic elements of paintings - Drawing, Shape, Value, Temperature of Color & Edges. Tom will demonstrate and teach his 6 C's.... Content, Concept, Composition, Craftsmanship, Color, and Center of Interest. We will discuss the different stages of a painting from start to finish.  You will go home with a portfolio of valuable exercises that you can refer back to as you move forward in your own painting process.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Tom grew up in Verona, WI. He started out in Engineering & then switched to Art Education. He graduated from Milwaukee’s Layton School of Art. After graduation Tom built a reputation in Milwaukee’s Advertising community. He started his own illustration company, Art Factory, Ltd.  More recently, Tom has made a transition to Fine Art, painting from his heart & exhibiting in several Galleries and competing in Plein Air events around the country.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Frankie Johnson is an accomplished artist with over 40 years of experience in oil painting and pastels.  For the last thirty years, Frankie has taught drawing, oil and pastel painting at The Studio In The Woods (Wauconda, Illinois), The Studio of Long Grove and the Mainstreet Art Centre.  She opened the Mainstreet Art Centre in 1994 with a talented staff of instructors.  She conducts workshops in portrait and landscape painting at various locations.

Frankie has participated in many juried exhibitions and plein air painting competitions and won numerous awards for her paintings through the years.  Her work has appeared in shows and galleries all over the Midwest.

Margaret Dyer

The Figure in Pastels

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

In Margaret’s workshops students are taught a traditional pastel painting technique. Working with live models and photos, students will explore drawing, composition, anatomy, proportion, value, color and pastel application. Emphasis will be on developing form using light and shadow using Margaret’s easy step-by-step method. For those who are bewildered by color or are wanting to speed up and become less tight in their work, this is an excellent class to take. Students do not need prior pastel experience. Some drawing would be helpful, but not imperative.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Margaret has lived in Atlanta, GA, since her family moved from New York in 1960. She attended the Atlanta College of Art at the High Museum of Art and furthered her studies under painters Roman Chatov, Kate Fetterolf and Jim Richards. A Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America, Masters Circle in the International Association of Pastel Societies and award-winner in the American Impressionist Society, Margaret has made her living for over 20 years selling her work and teaching. Follow her and travel vicariously with her.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
Direct Painting is also known as “Alla Prima” painting. This is a highly expressive style where, the work is usually started and finished in one session. This “fast” painting method is achieved by learning how to mix the correct value, color and texture with each brushstroke. This can be used in the studio as well as confidently in plein air work. There will be daily demos. Students will be instructed while working from photos or from life. So if you’re ready to take your painting to the next level or just learn a different approach to painting, this workshop is for you. Learn how to fill your work with fresh beautiful color,
feeling and responsiveness.

Jan Berglund is a graduate of the American Academy of Art in Chicago. She is an award winning artist and instructor for the past 30 years.
